Dons & Divas: La Traviata in Concert
3 p.m., September 13, 2011
3 p.m., Tuesday, September 13, 2011
The famous opera by Giuseppe Verdi is based on La dame aux Camélias (1852), a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas. The title “La Traviata” means literally The Fallen Woman, or perhaps more figuratively, The Woman Who Goes Astray. It was originally entitled Violetta, after the main character.
The opera has become immensely popular and it is second on the Operabase list of the most-performed operas worldwide, behind only The Magic Flute.
Performances by Stephanie Northcutt, soprano; Kerry Gotschall, mezzo-soprano; Charles Stanton, baritone; John Stevens, tenor; Clara Lewis, narrator; and Dr. Roger Keele, accompanist.
