Ars Lyrica presents The St. John Passion with the University of Houston Concert Chorale

8 p.m., Friday, March 25, 2011

Bach’s setting of the passion narrative from the Gospel of John is sacred drama of the highest order. This beloved work, presented in collaboration with the Moores School of Music Concert Chorale, features tenor Tony Boutté as the Evangelist and a stellar lineup of soloists and players.  Select singers from the Klein High School Choir will also join the ensemble.

Over the last 12 years, Ars Lyrica Houston has “set the agenda for imaginative period-instrument programming in Houston,” according to the Houston Chronicle.  The Grammy-nominated early music ensemble offers a yearly series of programs at Houston’s Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, where it is the resident period-instrument ensemble, and also performs regularly at other Houston-area and statewide venues. Ars Lyrica’s  thematic programming and advocacy of unfamiliar yet exceptional works from the 17th and 18th centuries has given it a distinctive edge, both in Houston and in the international early music community. Gramophone recently praised Ars Lyrica’s debut CD (on the Naxos label) for its “exemplary skill and taste,” the ensemble’s musicians for their “impassioned performance” of never-before recorded works by Alessandro Scarlatti.
